It’s no secret that getting to know our students at the start of the year can be a game changer. But, how well do our students know themselves? How well do they know themselves as learners?
In this lesson, your students will use 2 different forms of data collection, along with a data analysis and guided reflection worksheet, to help better understand their personal learning style. These activities are perfect, not just for the start of the year, but for anytime you want to help your students understand their learning process. A fantastic tool to incorporate with collaborative group making, classroom management, and more!
This lesson can be used as a stand-alone, but it is also an ideal introduction to the Information Processing Unit (check out the bundle here!). I like to start my year with the entire unit. This NGSS based science unit not only engages your students with the science behind their sensory systems, it helps them understand how these systems aid in their learning!
Students will investigate the question: What can I discover about my own learning behaviors based on data I collect in class?
Recommended Age Group: middle school, grades 6-8

This lesson is part of a focus on the NGSS standard MS-LS1-8 (Gather and Synthesize information that sensory receptors respond to stimuli by sending messages to the brain for immediate behavior or storage as memories). The standard is covered fully in the unit bundle.
